Here at Gary’s, we take pride in offering quality auto repair and getting your vehicle back on the road. We know that over time, you become connected and attached to your vehicle in a unique way, and letting it go isn’t always easy. No car is indestructible though, and there will come a day when even your most treasured vehicle decides to give up the ghost. Knowing when it’s time to stop spending money on a vehicle and to move on is something a lot of people struggle with. We’d love to offer you the same auto repair forever, but we know that sometimes moving on is better in the long run. With some helpful advice from Gary’s you can figure out when the right time is to get your old vehicle off the road and get into something newer.

To begin, neither age nor kilometers should be a major indicators of when to take a car off the road. THere are cars going on 100 years old that still run like the day they were sold. There are also vehicles that have over a million miles on their odometer. These cars are more exceptions than rules, but they still show the idea that if a vehicle is well maintained and respected, then it will last.

Don’t Just Flip A Coin

One thing to consider is how you drive your car. While we all probably want to say we’re amazing drivers, for some of us, that simply isn’t true. How you drive your vehicle over the length of time you own it goes a long way in determining when it’s headed for scrap. If you’re an occasional driver who uses their car for errands, then even after 25 years and 500,000 kilometers, your vehicle can be in great shape. If you’re especially hard on your vehicles, then a new car may only last 10 years. Assuming you’re an average driver, there are still some tell-tale signs that it’s time to send your car to the big garage in the sky.

The first step to assessing a future with your ride is to know the value of it. Not what you paid for it, but what the current market value is for your car. If you do some research and find that your vehicle is only worth $2000, but you’re facing $3000 in repairs (this time) then the decision is a no-brainer. The most costly repairs are as follows:

Motor Replacements: The heart of your vehicle is the motor, meaning if it fails, your car is useless. Given the high degree of technicality in a motor, as well as the cost of labour, a dead motor can set you back anywhere from $1000 all the way to $10,000.

Head Gaskets: Like other parts of your engine, if a head gaskets blows, you can expect costly repairs. Head gaskets are what seal your engine’s cylinders, allowing for combustion to take place. Head gasket repairs can set you back as much as $2000.

transmissionTransmission Replacements: The next crucial component in your vehicle’s drive train is the transmission, which turns power from the engine into rotation at the wheels. A typical transmission overhaul can cost anywhere from $2000 up to $5000.

Air Conditioner Compressor: Parts of your AC system are easy to repair. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of them. The compressor is essentially what allows the AC system to work, and because of that a failure in the compressor renders it useless. Compressor repair can cost up to $1000.

These are the extreme costs of these services, in many cases, the actual repair bill will be much less. These are also not what you’d ever expect to pay at Gary’s Automotive. What’s important to consider with these costs is the value of your vehicle, and if repairs are worth it.

Aside from factoring in the cost of repairs, you’ll also have to factor in the cost of future repairs as well. Are the repairs you’re looking at a solution or a fix? If you’re spending money on repairs now, only to expect more in the future, then you need to work out those costs.

All in all, each situation is different. If you’ve had your vehicle for more than 10 years and are facing some massive repairs, it might be worth sitting down and looking at the cost of repairs vs the cost of a new vehicle. If you plan on trading in your vehicle, then doing it sooner rather than later will be beneficial to your trade and can help you get a better deal.

If you just can’t part with your ride yet, then bring it into Gary’s Automotive for expert repairs, and with our prices, you won’t have to consider selling your car!
