Future and Self Driving Vehicles

We have evolved in the past 80 years more than we did in the past 400 years. 50 years before from today we couldn’t have thought of driving a Lamborghini or a Ferrari that will have a map in it and it will take us to our destination with the least amount of efforts involved. But we don’t have to go that far beyond in the past 20 years we were hoping to flying cars but nobody though that a Self-driving Car might also be a thing of the future.

The automotive industry has advanced to new heights, not necessarily in converting a environmental friendly technology but surely moving to a self-driving technology is a the next big thing. What does this means to our current traffic situation and the way we are accustomed to travel? Would a self-driving vehicle eliminate the need of a person to be in a present state of mind? Is that a good thing or a bad thing? We surely do not know the answers yet. The stakeholders in the self-driving vehicles are increasingly curious and looking for resources to address these issues but the people who have a stake in their cities and societies will also want to be a part of these debates as well, there should be a system that addresses and allows people to voice their relative issues since the shape of the coming future might be very different than as what we know now.

The question no longer remains that whether self-driving cars will be on the road or not but the question now is When SDVs will overtake the roads. The trend is continuously and rapidly growing among the top automotive producers and they all want to be the leaders in this niche. Surely Ellon Musk has taken the lead but who knows the next best SDV is made by Honda. Economical, fuel efficient and reliable, who wouldn’t buy that right? On top of that you don’t have to worry about using your cell phones while driving either you might as well watch a movie or a series while driving to or from work.

How do you know it’s time for Brake Repair?

Having a perfectly functional braking system is not only essential for optimum performance but also for your safety as well. By regularly checking your brakes you avoid unnecessary circumstances that will not arise by simply doing routine checkup and following these steps;

  • Timely check your brake pads for wear and tear, if your brake pads are anywhere less than a quarter inch you should look for a replacement
  • When you hear squealing noise while breaking, that is also because your brake pads are worn out and now the metal pieces are rubbing against the brake rotors.
  • If you notice that your vehicle is pulling to one side, this can be an alignment issue but also keep in mind that when your brake calipers are not fully released they result in generating more force on that wheel hence pulling your vehicle to one side.
  • One more thing that should not be ignored is if there is a sighting of any liquid which is yellow in color, usually brake system leaks release a yellow colored liquid and this can lead to a complete loss of your braking system.

We all love our cars and we never want to be in a situation where we cannot drive them even after having one. Arguably brakes are one of the most important element in keeping your car on the road, so you should not take any issue related to your vehicle braking system lightly. If you think your car is in need of brake repair take your car to a service center and consult with a professional mechanic. Make sure you get quality replacement parts for peace of mind, longer brake life and maximum performance.

Gary’s Automotive has over 36 years of brake repair experience. We offer competitive service pricing to give our customers great saving on brake repairs. Try out one of our four convenient locations today for your brake repair needs.

Most of us don’t know that a car can heat up to 20 degrees in less than 10 minutes. If it is hot and the temperature is around 40 degrees outside your car can reach twice that temperature when closed & regardless to say such high temperature is harmful for you.  What we do not realise is even when we are driving in our air conditioned cars if we do not regularly check them they can be dangerous to our health.

Tips for optimum use of Car Air-conditioning;

Turn on Air conditioning once the car starts moving: because the compressor will run faster when the engine is running fast, you will just be wasting your gas by letting the car cool before you actually go.

Keep the Temperature low: Keeping the car air condition at low temperature dries the air out lesser than on higher temperature and also saves you some fuel. If you set the air conditioning at a high temperature that will reheat the air hence more fuel burnt.

Keep your car filter Clean: airflow is directly affected by a dirty air filter and the airflow you get will not be optimum. Make sure to check the air filters regularly

Regularly go for Car Service: Your car just like your house needs your attention and care and if you know how to service your air conditioning at home that’s well and good and if you don’t than try to take your car in for service every once in a while. Do not wait for a year before you back to the garage only to find out that a small problem has now cost you replacement of the entire cooling system.

Things not to do with your car Air conditioning system:

Fresh air vent should be closed when switching on the Air conditioner, if you don’t that will allow hot air from outside of the car to mix with the cool air and reduce cooling as a result.

Do not operate the air conditioning with low refrigerant gas as that will lead to the premature failure of the car compressor.

If you prefer to service your car at home, make sure you have proper vacuuming for the system before recharging the car air conditioner refrigerant, improper vacuuming will lead to loss of cooling.

Congratulations Christina!

The Glory That Is IIHS Crash Videos

IIHS Crash Tests

Car accidents are bad. They are also beautiful. While we all take precautions and steps to ensure we never get into an accident, there is a certain morbid curiosity that comes with car accidents. Not with seeing people be injured, but in seeing the engineering and science that goes into making a 2500 pound chunk of steel survive slamming into a wall at 60 km/h.

Thankfully, we don’t have to subject our own vehicles to this testing. The IIHS, or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, regularly uploads new videos to their youtube channel. These videos show many types of modern vehicles being subjected to various crashes and accidents. If you haven’t already checked out these videos, we highly recommend them. The use of crash test dummies, multiple camera angles, and HD slow motion video makes for some really interesting content. We’ve gathered some of our favourite IIHS crash videos here!

The Uber Debate

uberlogo
Before we get started it’s important to keep in mind this is an opinion. Taking a taxi is a great way to get around the City of Ottawa. Right now though, the city is caught in a sort of a transition between proven ways and new ideas.

Getting around Ottawa can be a bit of a hassle, and for those that don’t own a vehicle it can be even more time consuming. I have lost count of the times a bus has either been late, early, or just plain absent. Getting a cab from the city’s west end to the market on a friday night can quickly get expensive, and with many people opting to use the service the wait times can grow long. Neither system is perfect, which leaves plenty of room for competition. When that competition shows up and starts becoming more popular, should it be outlawed?

7 Reasons Why Canadian Driving Is The Best In The World

Canada DayFrom log cabins built by beavers and free healthcare, to strong beer mixed with maple syrup, everyday is a great day to be Canadian. On July 1st, 1867 Queen Elizabeth herself came to Canada, and was greeted by lumberjacks riding on moose serving poutine. After being serenaded by Rush, we were immediately declared a sovereign nation and promptly apologized to The Queen for leaving. Ever since then, this great nation of ours has grown into a world superpower of kindness and peace. This great country of ours is also blessed in that we are the second largest country on earth. All that space means a lot of driving, and Canada certainly is a great place to see by car.

7 Reasons Why Canadian Driving Is The Best In The World

Take a look around, and you’ll quickly see why. Many people claim that the American Interstate System is a modern wonder of the world, but on this day it’s important to remember that we went to war with them once and they lost, so who cares. CANADA #1!

Summer Vehicle Safety

summer vehicle safetySchools almost out, and the season of long weekends and road trips is upon us. We’ve already covered how to stock your car, and where to go, so now we need to think of how to do that safely. Statistically, you are more likely to be involved in a car accident in the summer than in the winter, due to more drivers on the road and greater speeds. With some simple advice, staying safe on the roads can go a long way to making sure that your summer is enjoyable.

What To Remember For Summer Vehicle Safety

Ottawa is, to put it nicely, “blessed with vivid seasons”, meaning the summers are sticky hot and the winters are biting cold. The main reason that summer can be dangerous is because of the increase in drivers and increased speed. In winter, very few people are planning long road trips at highway speeds. That’s why one of the most crucial things to remember is to watch your speed and distractions. This is good advice for any time of year, but is easy to forget come the summer. The two big weather conditions you’ll see come summer are +40° temperatures and heavy rains. Both come with their own unique driving conditions.

Fighting A Traffic Ticket

Getting a traffic ticket can be a huge burden, both to your finances and to your record. Fight or Flight

If you choose to simply pay your ticket, then the process will be explained to you. Many people think that paying a simple traffic ticket is the more responsible choice, since it keeps the already over worked court systems free from dealing with minor charges, and it allows you to take responsibility for your actions. This may be the case, but some would also argue that many infractions and fines are simply put in place to be a revenue stream for the Government. In many cases, the most common piece of advice is to fight the ticket no matter what. There are a number of ways this is possible. Gary’s is here to help you separate fact from fiction in order to help you know your rights as a citizen.

Sharing Ottawa’s Roads

Sharing Ottawa's roads mapWhen the first roads were built, it was impossible to imagine the types of traffic that would be on them today. From dirt footpaths to 8 lane superhighways, roads have evolved to take on modern traffic with efficiency and speed. In recent years, a push has been made to allow an alternative mode of transit to cars, such as walking or bicycling. This has created a fierce divide between cyclists and motorists, with each claiming that the other isn’t following the rules of the road. As you can see by this map of Ottawa showing the roads vs the bike lanes and paths, there’s going to be plenty of overlap where drivers and cyclists will share the road. Gary’s Automotive is here to help both sides know the proper rules of the road so everyone can get out and enjoy what this city has to offer.
